Domaine René Lequin-Colin, Santenay Les Hâtes 2021

Flag of France

The tiny 9ha plot of vineyards belonging to Domaine René Lequin-Colin has been in the same family since 1679. Based in the village of Santenay at the foot of Burgundy's southern Côte de Beaune, they only making wine in minuscule quantities, and have garnered a real reputation for top-quality, small-batch and very authentic Burgundy. This is one of the most generous Santenay Chardonnays and it's all based in the soil. 'Les Hâtes' is a lieu dit in the mid-slope of the Côte, sandwiched between the Premier Cru sites of Beaurepaire - which is just beneath 'Sous la Roche' - and the more famous Premier Cru Santenay sites of Passetemps, Beauregard, Clos de Mouches and Clos Faubard. Here, there is more topsoil which creates a richer and longer wine. Equal parts fruity and mineral with a strong oaky backbone; it's Burgundy at fantastic value.
